The Pogues

Luke Kelly, The Dubliners, Christy Moore, Sinead O'Conner, In Tua Nua, Cactus World News, Stiff Little Fingers, Moving Hearts, Planxty, The Cheiftans...

They all couldn't put a foot wrong in my book, but somehow it was the Pogues that pulled it all together for me; Rescuing priceless remnants of the past, tradition, and the history of Irish music & storytelling - saving it all in the eleventh hour from oblivion and irrelevance for generation Xers – like me, just coming of age.

They fused it all together with the angst of the faceless displaced Irish immigrants and the force of “punk” in the most compelling and subversive way sonically conceivable.  Shane MacGowan - the genius Tipperary Lad at the helm of a ship full of madmen (Cool enough to have Elvis Costello as his Navigator), barely piloting the gauntlet of corporate icebergs and record company giants who continue to thrust crap music into radio and television.  Oh, how dull our world would have been without them.  Mine would have fallen apart at least.  Listening to them kept my musical heart beating, so far away from home with my dreams on life support.

Poor Shane needed the handicap of alcohol just to slow his brilliance down enough for other to appreciate him.  A proud Tipperary Lad like my father and Jeff Buckley’s great grandfather.  He integrated it all into a vibration I aspire to continue.

Influences

U2
A huge inspiration, sonically and musically, that came out of the post-punk new wave movement.  Their ability to integrate their spirituality with their music was a massive influence on Karl.

David Bowie
Need I say more?  Bowie has been an inspiration to every musician in some form or another.  His ability to continually marry theatre, art, imagery, graphics and sound are unparalleled by any other artist.
